What is Oriental Medicine?

Oriental medicine is an ancient system of healthcare that focuses on balancing the functions of the body. The foundation of these practices is rooted in the ancient philosophies of Chinese culture. Basic to this philosophy is the concept of yin and yang, which means that all things exist and function through a balance of opposing forces.

Traditional Oriental medicine treats the whole body, not just the symptoms. Practitioners of Oriental medicine look to the interactions of various signs and symptoms in order to identify patterns of imbalance within the body.  Once the pattern is understood, various methods of treatment can be employed to help the body correct the imbalances- and so relieve the symptoms.

Many variables are taken into account.  These variables may include lifestyle, eating and sleeping patterns, emotions, stress levels, living environment, and past medical history.  All of these factors influence the body and how it functions.  Through lifestyle changes and treatment with Oriental medicine, the patient can return to and remain in balance.

Different Treatment Methods include:

Chinese Herbs-various plant, mineral, and animal substances are used to affect the pattern the patient presents.
Acupuncture-Needles are inserted at various points in the body to redirect and adjust the flow of energy, or Qi.
Moxibustion-The burning of herbs (moxa) to warm a particular area of the body
Acupressure, tui na, kiatsu or massage-Various techniques to loosen muscles and increase the flow of energy
Cupping-application of heated glass cups to the skin, pulling the affected area and changing its energy flow
Gua sha-the use of various implements to painlessly scrape the skin to alter the energy flow
Lifestyle  Counseling-including food, exercise and environmental influences.
